When the Standard Isn’t Enough

The exposure class is the foundation of design. The EN 206 correctly defines types of exposure and the basic requirements for concrete. However, in real conditions we often encounter multiple degradation mechanisms acting simultaneously—for example in wastewater treatment plant environments, where chemical exposure, moisture, and biogenic corrosion combine.

The problem is that this combination is often underestimated in design. In such cases, environmental classification alone is not sufficient. It’s necessary to go deeper—understand the specific conditions, structural details, and adjust the material solution accordingly.

👉 This is exactly where, in practice, the difference most often emerges between a design that merely follows the standard and one that performs reliably over the long term.
