Why should you be interested in cement?

Alright, maybe not you specifically. Maybe it’s more something we deal with as technologists.

Why should you be interested in cement?

Alright, maybe not you specifically. Maybe it’s more something we deal with as technologists.

👉 But let’s quickly recap a few basic facts every construction professional should know.

You’re aware that cement affects setting time, the hydration process, resistance to environmental conditions, and the overall durability of a structure.

At the same time, you know there isn’t just one type.
According to EN 197-1, there are 5 main groups of cement:

CEM I – Portland cement (without additives)
CEM II – Portland composite cement (e.g. with fly ash, slag)
CEM III – Blast furnace cement (higher slag content, better chemical resistance)
CEM IV – Pozzolanic cement
CEM V – Composite cement (combination of multiple main constituents)

Each behaves differently. And each is suited for different conditions.

👉 Final question:
Have you noticed that some types of cement are being used less and less in practice today?

More on that in the next part.
